Spa Talk

Yeah, just what IS a Vichy Shower?? (Pardon us, this section is under construction.)

Types of Massage

Swedish. The traditional massage of long strokes gliding with deep circular movements to relieve stress and tension in outer muscles. Relaxing and soothing. This is the type of massage to get if you want a pampering, soothing spa experience.

Deep Tissue/Sports Massage. Deep tissue massage targets the deepest layers of mucles. It releases tension and soreness in overstressed areas by employing short strokes and powerful pressure. Suitable for massage addicts and when you need knots worked out. Deep tissue may be painful at times during the massage, but it will alleviate chronic pain from knotted and stressed muscles.

Reflexology. Reflexology is the ancient Chinese rejuvenating technique of triggering precise pressure points on the feet. Each area of the foot corresponds to specific regions of the body. Stimulation of these points strengthens the immune system, improves circulation and brings balance to the related parts of the body and internal organs.

Tui-Na. Tui-Na is the traditional Chinese medical form of massage. It can be done light- or deep-tissue-style. It utilizes the teachings of Chi-Gong to combine pushing, rubbing, and tapping the body’s muscles, acupressure points and energy meridians. It can treat all manner of bodily ills and sicknesses. As Tui-Na sees it, this is accomplished by restoring the balance between your body’s Yin and Yang energies, which constitute all things.

Shiatsu. Japanese technique to balance the body using pressure point massage to stimulate specific meridian (energy) points. Gentle stretches and thumb pressure treat and invigorate the whole body.

Diamond Microdermabrasion

Also called a Diamond Peel or Crystal-free Microdermabrasion. Diamond microdermabrasion differs from traditional treatments  in that it doesn’t rely on microdermabrasion crystals to perform skin exfoliation. It uses microdermabrasion tips covered in tiny diamonds to perform skin exfoliation. When the diamond microdermabrasion tip makes contact with the skin it abrades against the top layer pulling it off. The microdermabrasion machine then sucks the loose dead skin cells away from the face. Areas closer to the eyes and mouth can be abraded more accurately with diamond abrasion (no risk of stray crystals causing damage or being ingested). Otherwise, diamond and crystal microdermabrasion peel procedures are exactly the same in that the treatment provider passes the wand over each area of your skin three times.

One advantage of diamond crystal-free microdermabrasion is that the dead skin cells are accumulated onto a cotton filter and you can see exactly what was removed from your skin after the treatment is finished. It may seem gross, but it is one of those “eww!” things that is gratifying to see.

Endermologie

Endermologie is a non-invasive technique for reducing the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite often shows up as dimpling on the skin, sometimes called the cottage cheese look, even in those who are fit. The look of cellulite does not necessary diminish with weight loss and liposuction fails to address this top layer of fat under the skin.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL sometimes called photorejuvenation or photofacial, is a skin treatment is commonly used to improve a wide range of skin problems including: sun damage, wrinkles, stretch marks, and age spots.

Vichy Shower

A Vichy shower is a metal arm with five to seven shower heads that runs parallel to a cushioned treatment table, so you can get a shower while lying down. It is usually part of a body treatment, like a salt scrub or body wrap. Instead of jumping up and getting in a shower to rinse off the salt or mud, you simply lie there.

During a Vichy shower you are usually draped with towels — one between your legs and for women, one across your breasts. You can wear disposable underwear. When you’re on your back, the therapist might put something over your face to minimize the water spray in your face.

If you’re anxious about nudity, this is probably not the treatment for you. Turning over with wet towels tends to be a little sloppy.
